Jessica Shaffer Lee
Network Support Engineer Lead, Network Engineering
Jessica Shaffer Lee was an electrical and computer engineering student at Georgia Tech when she began a co-op position with OIT. That’s when, she says, the network engineering team sparked her interest, setting the stage for her future career. “The unique hands-on learning experience with enterprise-grade equipment and the flexibility and support to lead my own learning and projects inspired me to pursue a career as a network engineer.”
It’s incredibly rewarding knowing that my contributions directly affect the operation of critical network infrastructure that supports education, research, and innovation.
Rewarding
In her role, Shaffer Lee focuses on network security, overseeing the enterprise firewall and VPN services at Georgia Tech, which involves troubleshooting, project leadership, and planning coordination. She also leads user training for firewall self-service and manages student hiring, a nod to her dedication to IT education and mentorship.
For Shaffer Lee, the most rewarding aspect of working in IT at Georgia Tech is contributing to the advancement of education in a collaborative and inspiring environment. “It’s incredibly rewarding knowing that my contributions directly affect the operation of critical network infrastructure that supports education, research, and innovation,” she said.
Advice for Women
"Leverage online learning resources and networking platforms to explore IT roles that truly excite you,” she said. She also points to the power of mentorship. "Seek out mentors who can provide guidance, share their experiences, and help you navigate the complexities of the industry for women.”
Shaffer Lee is confident about the future for women in IT over the next decade. "I'm optimistic that we will see more women entering into IT careers, thanks to increased efforts to encourage K-12 STEM education. Also, as the industry continues to value diversity and inclusion, this will open the door and increase opportunities for supportive work environments that encourage women to join, and stay, in the tech sector — and we will see women ascend into more leadership roles.”
